Implementing FAIR data principles in industrial life science research

  • 29 January 2020
  • Location: Hinxton, UK

Join the first FAIRplus Innovation and SME Forum on 29 January 2020 in Hinxton, UK, to discuss the challenges and opportunities for large companies and SMEs in adopting FAIR data practices.

The IMI FAIRplus project aims to change the way life sciences data is managed and shared. The Innovative Medicine Initiative itself has a total budget of 5.3 billion and has launched over 100 individual projects across all areas of pharmaceutical research and drug development. However, data from these projects are often stored in “isolated silos,” and are rarely used outside the projects that generated them.

FAIR stands for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. The goal of FAIRplus is to break these silos and make it easier for researchers to find and access  relevant data and integrate them into their own research. The project will deliver guidelines and tools to facilitate the application of FAIR principles to data from other IMI projects and pharmaceutical companies.

The first FAIRplus Innovation and SME Forum is aimed at companies working with life science data, companies planning to provide FAIRification services and anyone interested in FAIRification of their data.

The main goal of the event – to be held at the Wellcome Genome Campus in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK – is to present the first outcomes of the project and hear from companies providing FAIR data solutions about their experience. The participants will also learn about the FAIRplus Fellowship programme which offers comprehensive FAIR data training, including a short stay at one of FAIRplus consortium partners.

The agenda includes:

  • Introduction to FAIRplus
  • Guidelines for making data FAIR
  • Flash talk by SMEs
  • Hands-on session on FAIRification
  • Panel discussions
  • Keynote by Carole Goble: The history and the future of FAIR principles

Erik Schultes, GO FAIR International Science Coordinator GFISCO, will participate at the panel discussion “The FAIR Landscape” chaired by Serena Scollen (ELIXIR, FAIRplusProject Coordinator). Other participants include Carlos Parra Calderón (FAIR4Health), HughShanahanv(FAIRsFAIR), Alexandra Grebede Barron (PistoiaAlliance), Helen Parkinson (FAIRplus,WP3 Co-Lead).

Participation is free of charge, but registration is required.

FAIRplus is coordinated by ELIXIR, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV is the pharmaceutical industry lead. It started in January 2019 and will run until June 2022.
